How to Start Your Cosmetology Career

Starting Your Cosmetology Career

Maybe you’ve always had a slight interest in cosmetology, but never knew it was something you should seriously pursue. It could have started when you found yourself styling your doll’s hair, then maybe playing with your own (possibly taking it upon yourself to color it at home).

Your friends have probably asked you to style their hair. They think you’re talented when it comes to hair and makeup, and you enjoy doing it. Now it’s no surprise you’ve found yourself thinking about starting your cosmetology career.

Our cosmetology school is filled with students just like you. Follow along for a brief explanation of everything you need to know before starting your cosmetology career.

What is Cosmetology?

Before you enroll in cosmetology school, it is a good idea to understand what a career in the beauty industry really means. A cosmetology license enables you to provide a wide range of beauty services to clients, including:

  • Hairstyling: Cutting, coloring, styling, and treating hair.
  • Makeup application: Applying makeup to enhance clients’ features and create desired looks.
  • Nail care: Manicuring and pedicuring nails.
  • Skin care: Providing facials, waxing, and other treatments to cleanse, exfoliate, and nourish the skin.

Cosmetologists may also specialize in certain areas, such as bridal hair and makeup, hair extensions, or keratin treatments. They typically work in salons or spas, where they provide a wider range of beauty services, such as massage and body treatments. Some may also work independently or in other settings, such as fashion shows or film sets. The job can be physically demanding, as cosmetologists often stand for long periods of time and use their hands and arms extensively. However, it can also be very rewarding to see clients look and feel their best.

If you are interested in a career in cosmetology, there are many opportunities for advancement. With experience and training, you can become a salon manager, educator, or product specialist. You may also choose to start your own salon or spa business. Cosmetology school gives you the opportunity to decide what you are passionate about most.

If you find you are interested in any — or all — of the above services, you should seriously consider starting your cosmetology career to find out whether life as a cosmetologist is right for you!
